Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - "In recent years, the activities of the Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU) of animation, formation and missionary awareness have intensified, culminating in the Extraordinary Missionary Month 2019, which continues to have a strong echo. Everything that PMU does today at all levels, universally or locally, is a service to the local Churches. Following the spirit of its founder, Blessed Paolo Manna, PMU vigorously pursues the discourse of missionary animation and formation at all levels. It actively and proactively contributes to the process of raising awareness among priests, religious and lay people for the evangelizing work of the Church", explained Fr. Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen, OFM Conv, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU), speaking at the Study Seminar promoted for recently appointed Bishops in the ecclesiastical circumscriptions dependent on the Dicastery for Evangelization in Africa, Asia, America and Oceania.
"As one of the four Pontifical missionary Societies - observed Father Anh Nhue - the PMU stands alongside the other three (the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Holy Childhood and Saint Peter the Apostle) and walks alongside them in missionary promotion and animation throughout the world, as underlined in the Statute of the Pontifical Mission Societies".
The Secretary General of PMU also informs: "I would like to highlight the project of an international conference on 'Proclamation and Christian formation for a totally missionary Church', centered on the figure and service of catechists in collaboration with the Pontifical Urbaniana University. This conference will serve to relaunch the animation and formation of catechists. Then, we intend to plan and launch in the near future a continuing formation course dedicated to local catechists, and to organize with the National Directors of the PMS several missionary congresses wherever we can and where there is a need".
The Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU) was born on 31/10/1916 thanks to the inspiration of Blessed Paolo Manna, PIME missionary, and with the approval of Pope Benedict XV, with the aim of encouraging and forming the baptized faithful in their missionary responsibility through the pastoral service of bishops and priests according to the motto "The whole Church for the whole world".
Initially called the Missionary Union of the Clergy, it received the title of "Pontifical" by Pius XII in a decree dated 28/10/1956. St. Paul VI on 5/9/1966, with the Apostolic Letter 'Graves et increscentes' defined the PMU as "the soul of the other Pontifical Mission Societies", especially highlighting its task of "promoting and disseminating more and more in the Christian people full awareness of the mystery of the Church and an ever more active missionary spirit".
