Tai Pei (Fides Service) - To thank God for the fruits granted to the Catholic Hua Kuang Social Welfare Foundation; pray for the future of the Foundation and its members; renew commitment of service; commemorate God’s Love and China’s Martyr Saints in the light of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This was the purpose of a pilgrimage to Wu Feng Qi Marian Shrine organised by the Catholic Hua Kuang Social Welfare Foundation which for over twenty years has cared for persons with a mental disability. According to Tai Pei diocesan bulletin Christian Life Weekly for the 70 pilgrims (inmates and their families, volunteers and staff) the event was an experience of God’s love, the wonder of creation and the power of the Lord’s grace.
The Catholic Hua Kuang Social Welfare Foundation was started by Jesuit Father Stephen Jaschko in 1983, to help women with mental disabilities. The directress for the past 20 years has been Mrs Wu Fu-Mei. Thanks to benefactors the Foundation extended its activity true to its spirit (“see Christ in the little disabled brothers or sisters, valorise their capacities and help them live as normal a life as possible”). The Foundation Centre also treats people with depression. It started with 6 patients and today serves over 200 with great love, following the principle that no life must ever be abandoned. The Foundation plans to build a Hua Kuang Welfare Village to enable disabled people take part in life in society. (Agenzia Fides 25/04/2006 Righe: 30 Parole: 340)
