OCEANIA/PAPUA NEW GUINEA - Appointment of the Bishop of Goroka

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – Today the Holy Father Francis has appointed Fr. Walenty Gryk, S.V.D., currently Coordinator of Formation and Secretary for the Missions of the Verbites in Papua New Guinea, as Bishop of the Diocese of Goroka (Papua New Guinea).
His Exc. Msgr. Walenty Gryk, S.V.D., was born on February 23, 1957 in Uzbiereż, Poland. He attended the Major Seminary of Pieniezno and obtained a doctorate in theology at the Catholic University of Lublin. He made his perpetual vows in the Society of the Divine Word on September 8, 1983 and was ordained a priest on 28 April 1984.
Since 1984 he has been a missionary in Papua New Guinea, where he has held the following positions: Parish Priest of Namta, Diocese of Goroka (1985-1988); Parish priest in Drekikier, Diocese of Wewak (1988-1989; 1990-1994); Director of Verbite Postulants in Poland (1990-1994); Chaplain of the University of Goroka (1994-1999); District Superior of the Verbites in Simgo, Diocese of Kundiawa (1999-2005); National coordinator of biblical pastoral care (2004-2010); Director of the Diocesan Pastoral Center of Goroka (2005–2016); National Director of the PP.OO.MM. (2009–2019); Vicar General of the Diocese of Goroka (2011–2016); District Superior of the Verbites in Mt. Hagen and Vocation Director (2017-2019). Since 2020 he has been a Member of the Provincial Council, Coordinator of Formation and Secretary for the Missions of the Verbites in Papua New Guinea. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 14/2/2022)
