AMERICA/PERU - Ayacucho archdiocese launches “Great Mission” in view of Jubilee year 2009 to mark 400 years of foundation

Tuesday, 4 April 2006

Ayacucho (Fides Service) - To prepare to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the foundation of Ayacucho ecclesastical circumscription (20 July 1609) with a Jubilee year in 2009 the archdiocese of Ayacucho has called a “great mission” during which a hundred missionaries will travel all over the archdiocese to announce the Good News. The organisation of the Great Mission started 1 and 2 April with a pastoral meeting “The great mission in the light of the pastoral plan”. At the meeting presided by Archbishop Luis Sebastiani Aguirre of Ayacucho and auxiliary Bishop Gabino Miranda there were over 200 pastoral workers. The participants decided to start preparing lay people for the Great Mission which will have three stages: pre-mission, mission and Jubilee year.
The pre-mission stage which begins now in April will last until the end of 2006 and will consists in the formation of missionaries with a special Formation Course, at diocesan and parish level. In 2007 and 2008, the missionaries will carry the Gospel to the most remote parts of the archdiocese. In 2009 all the “Ayacuchanos” will be invited to take part in the Jubilee celebrations.
