EUROPE/ITALY - Saturday 18 March beatification of Carmelite nun Sr Elia di San Clemente, first Blessed for Bari: “my life is Love, believing in Love is a possibility God gives everyone”

Bari (Fides Service) - Saturday 18 March at 6.30pm in Bari Cathedral with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI there will be the beatification of Carmelite Sr Elia di San Clemente (1901-1927). The Mass will be presided by the Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto Archbishop Francesco Cacucci.
The new Blessed was born in Bari 17 January 1901 and baptised Teodora. As a child she was very religious and had dreams about the ‘lovely Lady’. She used to ask her friend to mediate with her on the Gospel and the lives of the Saints, St Therese of the Child Jesus in particular.
She became a Dominican Tertiary taking the name of Agnese. In 1917, she entered a Carmelite Convent and took the name of Sisyer Elia di San Clemente. Making her solemn profession on 11 February 1925. Life in community was not easy and she spent most of the day in her cell sewing altar cloths. She was weakened by a serious bout of flu in 1927 and months later died on Christmas day 192, she had always said: “I will die on a feast day”. (S.L.)
