AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - Appointment of bishop of Wau, South Sudan

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Wau, South Sudan, the Reverend Fr. Matthew Remijio Adam Gbitiku, M.C.C.J., until now vice rector and bursar of the International Theologate of the Cambodian Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus in Nairobi, Kenya.
Msgr. Matthew Remijio Adam Gbitiku, M.C.C.J., was born on 5 May 1972 in Mboro, diocese of Wau. He attended the minor seminary of Bussere in Wau (1984 to 1986) and secondary school in Wengiball (1986-1989). He completed his postulancy with the Comboni Missionaries. For his studies in philosophy, he attended the Saint Paul Interdiocesan Major Seminary in Khartoum, Sudan (1995-1997) and later completed his novitiate in Kampala, Uganda (1997-1999). He obtained a bachelor’s degree in theology at the Instituto Superior de Estudios Teologicos Juan XXIII-ISET in Lima (Peru). He received priestly ordination on 3 October 2004 for the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (M.C.C.J).
After ordination he held the following roles: parish vicar of Masalma, in Omdurma, Khartoum, then becoming parish priest, spiritual director of the Legionaries of Mary of the archdiocese of Khartoum and advisor of the Rongo Group Association (2004-2008). From 20’08 to 2010 he studied for a licentiate in spiritual theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In addition, he has served as director of priestly vocations and member of the group of vocational animators of the archdiocese of Khartoum (2010-2012); spiritual director of the Saint Paul Interdiocesan Major Seminary in Khartoum (2012-2013); vicar general of the archdiocese of Khartoum (2013-2017) and, from 2017 to the present, vice rector and bursar of the International Theologate of Combonian Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus in Nairobi, Kenya.
