Thursday, 9 February 2006

Rome (Fides Service) - The Higher Institute for Nursing Science, HINS opened by Opus Dei in Kinshasa the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, trains local men and women to enable them to improve the nation’s health services.
With funds from the city of Vizcaia in Spain, the Institute has launched a programme to improve hygiene and healthcare in six medical centres in the capital. With the help of Congo’s Health Ministry, 6 pilot clinics were selected: Kinshasa General Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Kintambo Hospital, Makala Hospital, Ngaliema Clinic and Bondeko Clinic. The goal: improve hygiene in hospitals.
The idea came after HINS students were sent for experience to local clinics and hospitals. As a country Congo has been occupied dealing with many urgent difficulties and problems and little time or funds to devote to hygiene and cleanliness in healthcare which is an aspect of vital importance.
To solve the problem the HINS launched a programme to increase awareness of the principles of hygiene in hospitals.
The programme includes updating basic healthcare training for hospital personnel and also training for hospital cleaners and provision of elementary essentials such as soap, disinfectants and cleaning materials. (AP) (9/2/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:25; Parole:258)
