Rome (Agenzia Fides) – To change perspective on the figure of the poor, who is not simply a passive recipient of missionary action, but is the active subject and collaborator in the construction of a new humanity; to consider Europe as a mission area, in need of the light of the Gospel; to re-qualify missionary work through specific pastoral services based on the environment and the needs of people; to enrich the international and multicultural Institute of the new dimension of interculturality. These are the four essential recommendations that will guide the Combonian Missionaries in the coming years, as established by the last General Chapter of the Institute.
Founded by Daniele Comboni on 1 June 1867 as the "Institute for the Missions of Nigrizia", currently the Combonians, who celebrate 150 years of missionary commitment, are about 1,540 that belong to 44 different nationalities, operating in 41 countries of 4 continents: Africa, America, Asia and Europe. In the events and changes in the history in this last century and a half of mission, the three principles of the Combonian method of evangelization have always remained the founder's spiritual heritage: "save Africa with Africa", that is to work with the poor so that they become the real protagonists of their history and destiny; "Make common cause with people", which means sharing life, dreams, struggles, hopes; "to evangelize as community" in the sense that the community becomes a sign and instrument of evangelization.
