Kisangani (Agenzia Fides) - "We talked about elections. Elections will be held. It is not a secret. They all talk about elections. And I think the president of the Republic, at his level, has not stopped saying that there will be elections", says to Radio Okapi His Exc. Mgr. Marcel Utembi, Archbishop of Kisangani and President of the Congolese Bishops' Conference (CENCO) After a meeting with the Head of State Joseph Kabila.
The Congolese President during his visit in Kisangani on July 5 met with several personalities of the city and the province of Tshopo, including Archbishop Utembi, who after the meeting said: "We have addressed other issues that cannot be disclosed now, because these are talks between two major authorities: the President of the Republic and the President of CENCO. As you know, CENCO had to carry out the mediation of direct negotiations for three months. And it is normal that the path regarding the implementation of this important document follows".
The Agreement signed on December 31, 2016, for this reason is called the "San Silvestro Agreement", among the various political and social parts of Congo, was possible thanks to the mediation of Bishops, provides for the formation of a national unity government to bring the country to the general elections by 2017. In the Message published at the end of their last Plenary Assembly (see Fides 26/6/2017), the Bishops reiterated that "the San Silvestro Agreement is the only road map, based on the Constitution, which we must demand respect and its application by the signatories".
