Lima (Agenzia Fides) - "We are all witnesses of the harsh reality that thousands of Peruvians who have lost everything are living", say the Bishops of Peru following a major emergency that the country is experiencing due to the floods that have claimed thousands of lives (see Fides 16/03/2017). "Accompanying the pain of thousands of brothers who are suffering because of adverse weather conditions throughout the national territory, especially in the north and center of the Country, we invite all Catholics and people of good will to show solidarity towards their suffering", continue the Bishops, who organized a prayer and solidarity Day, which was celebrated yesterday, Sunday, March 19.
Their message to the faithful: "may this third Sunday of Lent be a Sunday of Prayer, an expression of our faith and a testimony of our solidarity and charity, and a Day of national Collection for the victims". At the end of the Angelus yesterday, March 19, Pope Francis assured his "closeness to the dear people of Peru, hit hard by devastating floods. I pray for the victims and for those who are committed to providing assistance", said the Pontiff. The Head of the Peruvian State, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, thanked the Holy Father for the words of encouragement in the face of this major emergency. According to the National Emergency Operations Centre (COEN), natural disasters have so far claimed thousand of victims. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 20/03/2017)
