Hong Kong (Fides Service) - The great Salesian family of Don Bosco organised a charity evening to celebrate 100 years of mission in China and pay tribute to the many fathers who took part in this past century of Salesian mission of education and evangelisation. Centenary celebrations started in June 2003 and continue with various initiatives.
In 1906 the first 6 Salesians led by Father Louis Vermiglia (future bishop of Shao Zhou who founded the congregation of the Sisters Announcers of the Lord) arrived in Macao to launch the Salesian mission in China. In 1926 the mission was renamed Mary Help of Christians Chinese province and in 1931 the first Salesian of Chinese origin made his profession and a year later the Salesians launched their first publication in Chinese.
