Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "Be committed to saving lives and not to see an opportunity to make quick money through bribery and extortion". This is the appeal launched by the Bishops of Kenya to the officials responsible to ensure security on roads after the tragic accident on Saturday, December 10, on the road from Nairobi to Naivasha.
A tanker of flammable gas went out of control after passing on a bollard (speed bumps placed in places to force vehicles to slow down the speed) at full speed, investing a line of vehicles. Forty people were killed in the explosion of the tank and in the fire.
"The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the entire Catholic Church express their deepest sympathy and join bereaved families in mourning" said a statement sent to Agenzia Fides.
"We urge the different Government agencies responsible for road transport and human safety to ensure that proper signage is put on our roads, we call upon a deep rethinking of the erection of road pumps in different highways across the Country. These bumps are always removed after an accident", underline the Bishops.
"We also urge all road users to be extra careful this festive season and urge Government agencies responsible for road safety to renew their commitment to saving lives and not to see an opportunity to make quick money through bribery and extortion".
According to the National Transport Authority, this year so far 1,574 people have died in road accidents, 86 more compared to the same period last year. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 14/12/2016)
