AMERICA/PERU Vicar Apostolic of Jaén en Perú appointed

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on 11 November 2005 appointed Vicar Apostolic di Jaen en Peru (Peru) Rev. Fr. Santiago Maria Garcia De la Rasilla Dominguez, S.I., superior of San Pedro House in Lima, assigning him the titular see of Voncaria.
The new Bishop was born on 18 October 1936, in Madrid. At the age of 17 he joined the Society of Jesus. He studied philosophy in Alcalà di Henares, and obtained a licentiate in theology a the university of Granada. In 1976 -1977 he studied at the Paul VI Pastoral Institute University of Salamanca. He was ordained a priest on 14 July 1967 in Madrid, and sent on mission to Peru. He made his perpetual vows on 15 August 1973. He has ministered as follows: spiritual director and professor San Ignacio College, chaplain of Cursillos and Christian Family Movement (1972-1976). Parish priest at San Pedro parish and member of the Tacna diocesan council of consultors and clergy (1977-1998). Member of the promoting group of Community Animation Service "Movement for a Better World" (1998-2005). Superior San Francesco de Borja provincial house in Lima (2002-2004). Since 2004 Superior of San Pedro House in Lima.
Jaén apostolic Vicariate created in 1971, is situated in northern Peru. It has an area of 32,572 sq. km, a population of 452,000 including 380,000 Catholics, assisted by 17 diocesan priests and 12 Jesuit fathers, 1 permanent deacon, 128 women religious and 11 Poor Clare Sisters.
