AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - "There is a risk of genocide", said the leading association of the South Sudanese diaspora

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - In South Sudan the risk of genocide is real and everything must be done to prevent it, says the Coalition of Advocates for South Sudan (CASS), an association of various groups and organizations of the South Sudanese diaspora living in the United States.
CASS has launched an appeal to the African Union and IGAD on the growing crisis in South Sudan which stems from the clash between President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar.
"The actions of the actors in the South Sudanese conflict have produced an outcome that has raised the possibility of genocide as shown by the recent increase in ethnically-targeted attacks in the Country" says a statement sent to Fides. "Polarized communities are also increasingly using various social media platforms to spew hate speech. This rhetoric is inciting violence and animosity in a period when bridge-building is desperately needed. All indications point to the fact that the threat of genocide will only increase in the days ahead".
Local sources have repeatedly stated to Agenzia Fides the risk of genocide in South Sudan (see Fides 11/07/2016 and 13/10/2016), while the Catholic Church and other Christian communities are multiplying their efforts to try to defuse tensions and seek the path of peace (see Fides 17/10/2016).
