Erbil (Agenzia Fides) - The week of liturgical and community celebrations on the occasion of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Ankawa, a predominantly Christian suburb in Erbil, ended on Tuesday, September 13 with a long procession, accompanied by songs and prayers, and with a ceremony at a local stadium. The celebration was also attended by a multitude of Christian refugees who since spring of 2014 have found refuge in Ankawa, fleeing from towns and villages in the Nineveh Plain conquered by the self-proclaimed jihadi militias of the Islamic State.
The procession and the ceremony was attended by many priests, religious men and women engaged in the pastoral care of refugees, along with Archbishop Bashar Warda – at the head of the Chaldean archieparchy in Erbil - and Bishop Bawai Soro, who usually carries out his pastoral ministry at the service of the Chaldean community in the United States. During the ceremonies the multitude of those present listened to some biblical readings.
During the week of celebrations, all the churches and communities in Ankawa took part in a program which included moments of prayer, recreation and social and charitable initiatives. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 15/09/2016)
