Ho Chi Minh City (Agenzia Fides) - The phenomenon of human trafficking in Vietnam continues to increase, and advocacy groups argue that the victims are also influenced by social media. Between 2011 and 2014 cases increased by 11.6% compared to the previous four years. The data emerged during a conference against trafficking held in Hanoi in July, by the Ministry of Public Security.
According to the NGO the figures are higher, especially since traffickers take advantage of the growing use of social networks among Vietnamese youth. Southeast Asia is among the worst regions in the world for human trafficking, involving one-third of all women and children victims of trafficking worldwide. Some of the victims of trafficking in Vietnam are women sold for weddings on the border with China, where there are significantly more men than women. To raise awareness, the Government has established and celebrated the first National Day against Human Trafficking. Vietnam has also announced a strategy to tackle the phenomenon from 2016 to 2020. Between 2011 and 2014, government authorities investigated more than 2,200 cases of trafficking, arrested 3,300 criminals, and rescued about 5,500 victims. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 09/09/2016)
