Monday, 18 July 2016 episcopal conferences   violence

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "In the spirit of solidarity, we, Catholic Bishops in the AMECEA region condemn all acts of violence without exception. Fighting for whatever reason is an act of unjustifiable evil". This is what the Bishops in the AMECEA region wrote, the body that brings together the Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa, in a statement signed by the Chairman of the body, Cardinal Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel, Archbishop of Addis Ababa.
In the text, released by AMECEA and sent to Fides, the Bishops said they were "saddened by the tragic consequences of the violence which occurred in Juba from the evening of 7th July, 2016 which has claimed over 100 lives and rendered thousands of innocent people homeless".
Recalling the Constitution "Gaudium et Spes" on the sharing of the joys and sorrows of all followers of Christ, the text says: "Our brothers and sisters in the Republic of South Sudan, require our support for them to continue living a dignified life". Therefore,
recalling the dignity of the human person proclaimed in the Holy Scripture, they conclude: "We are encouraged by all voices that have called for calm and an end to fighting. We add our voices to theirs and urge all soldiers and civilians to refrain from all actions that can ignite and escalate the situation...peaceful dialogue is the only viable way of ending conflict".
