Chiapas (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of the diocese of San Cristobal de las Casas, His Exc. Mgr. Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel, said that "true education reform should not only be in the field of labor and management, but should be complete , integral, so that it is able to form the mind and the heart, with the collaboration first and foremost of parents and teachers".
In a statement sent to Fides, the Archbishop points out that this reform should include "academic content, pedagogy, methodology and social integration in this country we love so much". The Bishop expresses himself in a very positive way with regards to the dialogue between the government and teachers, announced yesterday by the government, after a long period of discussions (see Fides 24/06/2016) which also resulted in violent demonstrations.
Mgr. Arizmendi Esquivel notes that the five Bishops of Chiapas continue in their task, namely "insist with government authorities, so that the most important points may be resolved with dialogue: public education is not to be privatized; the rights of teachers have to be respected; all citizens manage to draw together an educational model that makes education a driving force of integral development of Mexicans, both in their knowledge in their attitudes and behaviors". The Bishop finally thanked in particular the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) for the withdrawal of the eight roadblocks that had been carried out in different parts of the area.
