San Pedro Sula (Agenzia Fides) - 20% of the total number of repatriated migrants in Honduras are minors.
According to data of the National Center of Information of the Honduran Social Sector (Ceniss), over the past 36 months over 21,000 children have been repatriated. The dramatic figures reflect the seriousness of the problem of many young children who risk their lives trying to reach the United States in search of a better life. The phenomenon has increased by 70% since 2014, says Ceniss.
According to most of the repatriated minors, economic problems are the main cause of emigration, followed by precarious family situations, violence or insecurity, violence in families, study or health reasons. In order to curb illegal emigration, the Country has initiated the operation called Coyote, because even though more than 90% of children are expelled before setting foot in the United States, migration continues to increase. In just a few days, thanks to this initiative, 7 people in Copán were arrested, who had 82 Central American migrants with them, of whom 27 were children. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 14/06/2016)
