Paris (Agenzia Fides) - To strengthen the coordination of 14 Caritas operating in Africa. This is the purpose of the meeting which opened yesterday, June 7, in Paris, attended by about fifty people, including 11 Bishops from 15 Countries.
According to information sent to Fides, the meeting, which will conclude on June 9, marks the start of the second phase of the coordination program launched in 2006. The first phase entitled "Institutional development and organizational strengthening" ended this year. The second phase, due to finish in 2018, will cost 2.5 million Euros, 60% of which is covered by the French Development Agency.
Leaders and operators will receive training to improve the management of projects, both at a human and administrative level and also at a financial level. Caritas participants are from: Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, Niger, Chad, Central Africa, Congo Brazzaville, Madagascar, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Several of these Countries have been crossed by serious political and socio-economic crises, in which Caritas structures are playing an important role in assisting the affected populations. This is the case of Côte d'Ivoire, which between 2002 and 2011 was divided in two, between the Government-controlled area and the area in the hands of rebels. In this case, Caritas Ivory Coast teams had permission to move from one area to another, to bring assistance and help maintain contacts between the two realities. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 08/06/2016)
