Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - "Five years after civil war in Syria - Let's wipe out their tears": is the new fundraising and solidarity campaign launched by "Caritas Korea" to give support to Syria. The funds, reported a statement of the organization to Fides, will be used to assist Syrian refugees, through the network of Caritas in Middle Eastern countries.
As part of the campaign, the Korean Catholic weekly "The Catholic Times" will carry stories on Syrian refugees in their countries but also in Lebanon, Jordan and other countries.
The civil war in Syria began on March 15, 2011. According to official estimates, 470,000 have died and 1.8 million injured so far. According to the U.N. Refugee Agency out of 23 million Syrians, some 6.5 million refugees have been internally displaced and 4.8 million have fled the country, in ruins. Also, "Catholic Times" reports that the European Union and Turkey have agreed to block the flow of Syrian refugees from Turkey to Greece, closing the route to Western Europe.
Caritas especially in neighboring countries are in difficulty because of the lack of funds and for the high number of people to assist. Since 2012, Caritas Korea has donated more than one million dollars, supporting six projects for Syrian refugees.
"However - says the Catholic Times – it is not enough to dry their tears". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 02/04/2016)
