AFRICA/SENEGAL - Senegal is preparing for the constitutional referendum to limit presidential term

Dakar (Agenzia Fides) - On 20 March, Senegalese voters are called to the referendum to approve the revision of the constitution promoted by President Macky Sall, which provides, among other things, the reduction of the presidential term from seven to five years. It also introduces the limit of two presidential terms.
Other provisions of the constitutional amendment strengthens the guarantees for all parties, including the opposition, and provide for the nomination of independent candidates for all public offices.
Even the National Assembly's supervisory powers are also strengthened on government action and those of the Constitutional Council on the laws before their promulgation. The principles of decentralization and devolution are finally introduced in the Constitution.
The small Catholic community in a predominantly Muslim Country (about 90% of the population) is closely monitoring this important event for the Country's political life. According to information sent to Fides, the parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Keur Massar held today, March 10, a meeting with Bernard Casimir Ciss, Director of Training and Communications at the General Directorate of the Elections of the Ministry of the Interior, to provide clarification on the referendum questions.
