Roma (Agenzia Fides) – On international Women’s Day, the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO/ UMOFC) celebrates the announced canonisation of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and thinks of the four Sisters of her Congregation brutally murdered in Yemen. In a statement sent to Fides WUCWO addresses women who are persecuted, suffer abuse in the home and on the streets, women who due to situations of indigence and poverty are victims of human trafficking for sexual exploitation, for wombs to rent . “We want to express our solidarity – Maria Giovanna Ruggieri world WUCWO chairwoman writes in a letter to all the organisations, - to women forced to leave their country because of war, persecution, climate change, poverty”.
WUCWO was founded in 1910 to promote the presence, participation and co-responsibility of women in the Church and in society. Today it comprises 100 organisations all over the world involving over 5 million women. WUCWO collaborates with various Councils of the Holy See, represents the voice of Catholic women at the United Nations Organisation in New York and in Geneva, at UNESCO in Paris, at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome and is a member of COATNET network that combats trafficking of human persons .(AP) (8/3/2016 Agenzia Fides)
