AFRICA/KENYA - Mission: Bread Broken for the Life of the World

Thursday, 20 October 2005

Nairobi (Fides Service)- In preparation for Mission Sunday celebrations in Kenya the national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in that country, Italian Consolata missionary Fr. Eugenio Ferrari, addressed a special letter to the local Church underlining the importance of the even which coincides with the closing of the Year of the Eucharist
Mission Sunday material prepared by the office of Fr Ferrari included a coloured poster with the agenda of missionary events for the month of October.
“I urge you dear members of the clergy and…archbishop and bishops during this year’s World Mission Sunday and the Sundays before it to explain to the flock the meaning of living the Eucharist and contributing to the mission through the Pontifical Mission Societies” Fr Ferrari says in his letter addressed to archbishops, bishops, priests religious and the laity .
Fr. Ferrari explains the Mission Sunday poster: “broken bread is the bread of communion and thanksgiving for all the graces received from God; the vestment worn by the priest in the photo reminds us of the 1994 Synod for Africa a clear reminder of the missionary mandate and a reminder that the Eucharist is with us to stay, to satisfy our daily needs”.
“The third aspect of the poser” he explains “is the person breaking the bread, and African priest. He is the symbol of missionary maturity that Church in Kenya is striving to achieve every day in her apostolate. The poster invites all the Church to live as missionaries as Christ wants them and as Pope John Paul II said in his Message for Mission Sunday this Year, ‘Bread Broken for the Life of the World’”.
Once again on Mission Sunday this year 23 October, all Christians are invited to join a round the world prayer 9-10am (local time) so the world we be held in an embrace of prayer that Christ may be ever more widely known. The initiative was started in France at the home of Pauline-Marie Jaricot, founder of the Propagation of the Faith. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 20/10/2005 righe 28 parole 335)
