Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) – More than 200 mayors from all over Argentina with various political positions, and supported by representatives and leaders of different religious groups, met yesterday to sign a paper of common commitment to a series of actions.
Among the most important: fighting trafficking of drugs and human persons; working to eliminate poverty and undernourishment among children; combatting violence on women, domestic violence, child abuse and child labour; develop policies to tackle environmental damage and encourage the use of renewable energy ; guarantee access to healthcare, quality education and clean water.
According to a report sent to Fides, the meeting was held at St Francis of Assisi Basilica in Buenos Aires, and mayors of different political positions signed commitment to what has been named "the Sant'Antonio Agreement ". The initiative of united commitment , launched by Mayor Gustavo Menendez of Merlo, is based on a desire to diffuse the principles contained in Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Sì, and tackle two realities earmarked by the Pope: drug trafficking and guaranteeing protection for the most vulnerable sectors of society.
