ASIA/IRAN - The Chaldean monastery of the Virgin Mary in Tehran reopens

Tehran (Agenzia Fides) - On the eve of the meeting in the Vatican between Iranian President Hassan Rohani and Pope Francis, it was possible to reopen the Chaldean monastery of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary in Tehran. This was reported by official sources of the Chaldean Patriarchate, recalling that the monastery had been closed since 2013. "Our congregation" refers to Agenzia Fides Sister Luigina Sako, superior of the Roman house of the Chaldean Sisters Daughters of Mary, "has been present in Tehran since 1963. Before the Islamic Revolution we also kept open a school. The monastery is next to the parish dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Now, after a suspension of more than two years, the sisters will continue their pastoral work among the people in the parishes". The monastery for now will host two nuns, Sister Batul and Sister Liliana, who even before the period of closure were part of the community of Tehran for many years. The Chaldean Archeparchy of Tehran, which in 2014 had six parishes and 2500 baptized, is currently led by Archbishop Ramzi Garmou. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 03/02/2016)
