Minya (Agenzia Fides) - The court of Beni Mazar sentenced a Coptic teacher on charges of insulting Islam, to three years in prison. The episode happened last spring, at a village school in Nasiriyya, near the town of Beni Mazar, in the Egyptian province of Minya (see Fides 28/05/2015). Four students of the school were arrested for having shown a video, filmed with a mobile phone, where they mimicked the scene of the slaughter of a faithful Muslim in an attitude of prayer, in imitation of the horrific executions committed by jihadists of the Islamic State (Is).
The brief video, which represented in its own way an indictment against the atrocities committed by the jihadists of the Islamic State, had incredibly sparked anger and false accusations in the area, which forced local authorities to take action to restore calm, convening last April 17, a meeting of "reconciliation" among Christians and Muslims, with the participation of imams and priests in the area. The same four boys were arrested, also to be subtracted from any violent revenge, and families had to pay a deposit of 10 thousand Egyptian pounds for the release of each student. The professor, held jointly responsible for the short film, had already been forced to leave the village of Nasiriyya with his family. Now the judicial trial has just begun which sees him sentenced to three years imprisonment. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 1/2/2016)
