Dakar (Agenzia Fides) - "Caritas Senegal wants to be in solidarity with man and be on his side whenever he is faced with the difficulties of life" said His Exc. Mgr. Jean Pierre Bassène, Bishop of Kolda and President of Caritas Senegal, in his opening address at the 52nd General Assembly of Caritas Senegal, in Tambacounda, on January 9. Mgr. Bassène stressed that local Bishops have invested in Caritas, "to remind themselves, as well as the whole Christian community, and in the light of the teaching of the Magisterium, of the importance of charity in proclaiming the Gospel".
In exhorting the delegates of Caritas to work more and more at the service of the poor and children, Mgr. Bassène announced that Caritas Senegal has invested 985 million CFA Francs in a program for the purchase of medical equipment and for the construction of two pavilions in the university hospital center of Fann and in St John of God of Thies Hospital.
The program, which aims to limit the Ebola outbreak that devastated the West African Countries, was developed with the support of Misereor and Kindermissionswerk of Germany, along with the Office National de l'Enseignement Catholique (ONECS ), the Association Nationale des Postes de santé catholiques du Sénégal (ANPSCS) and the Association Nationale de la Promotion Féminine (ANPF).
The President of Caritas Senegal finally highlighted that the body he chairs along with his partners, "as part of its investment program, has mobilized nearly 4 billion CFA francs, contributing, together with the State, to the efforts of resilience of populations, their access to essential services such as water, sanitation and food security and other issues related to the development of our communities".
The Governor of the region in Tambacounda praised the work of Caritas Senegal for the benefit of disadvantaged populations of all religions, and the contribution made "in a significant manner, with regards to the development of the Country". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 11/01/2016)
