AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - We hope for a peaceful Christmas after two years of Civil War

Wednesday, 16 December 2015 area crisis

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - "Two years after the outbreak of the civil war we continue to hope for peace, and perhaps this Christmas will be different from the last two, where we experienced suffering and fear", says a missionary source from South Sudan to Agenzia Fides, where yesterday the second anniversary of the outbreak of the civil war between the regular army, loyal to President Salva Kiir, and the rebels of former Vice President, Riek Machar was remembered.
"In all the States of the South Sudanese federation ceremonies were held to remember the victims of the war", says our source, who requested anonymity for security reasons.
"Despite the peace agreement signed on August 15 in different areas of South Sudan, fighting continues. The UN has decided to strengthen its peacekeeping mission in South Sudan with a thousand elements, equipping them with drones to monitor the movements of troops and respect the ceasefire".
According to our source, the main problem the population has to face is an economic one, "because the war has caused tremendous damage and until these conditions persist, no one from abroad will want to invest in the Country".
"Despite all these difficulties, no one can take away the hope of a better life. We hope that Christmas this year will mark the beginning of a new phase for South Sudan", concludes our source. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 16/12/2015)
