VATICAN - Statement from the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples

Wednesday, 11 November 2015 congregation for the evangelization of peoples

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, also known as "Propaganda Fide", fully adheres to the line of thought, orientation and the heart of the Holy Father with regards to the life and the reform of the Roman Curia; moreover, it is committed to satisfying the institutional purposes established by the "Pastor Bonus" Apostolic Constitution, as well as committed to respecting the wishes of donors who over the years have contributed to the Missionary Work. Therefore, it welcomes all the reforms foreseen by the Secretariat for Economy and submits all the budgets and final balance of the Dicastery to the Secretariat for Economy.
Therefore certain insinuations made by some media who spread false news are unacceptable. It was said, for example, that the Congregation rents real estate at favorable prices and there is a sauna or is the owner of Priscilla Hotel. All property owned by the Congregation, donated for the Missions are rented at market price; there are exceptions for reasons of situations of poverty. These properties are leased in compliance with the Italian law, of which both the Congregation owner, and the subject tenant have to respect. The income from these properties, on which taxes are regularly paid in Italy (in 2014 the Dicastery paid EUR 2,169,200 for IMU, in Rome alone), is primarily destined to the maintenance of the Congregation, the Pontifical Urbaniana University, the Pontifical Urban College, missionary Institutions and young Churches in mission territories. Propaganda Fide is grateful to the benefactors who, with their help, allow to proclaim the Gospel and to support the countless educational, social and health iniatives of the poorest Countries.
By way of clarification, if the dissemination of false and biased information happens again, this Congregation will be forced to protect its image in the appropriate seats. (Agenzia Fides 11/11/2015)
