EUROPE/ITALY - “Spiritual care for the sick must help them realise that even alone and immobile at home they can do something for society”. 1st meeting of the International confederation of Centro Volontari della Sofferenza

Saturday, 24 September 2005

Rome (Fides Service) - The International confederation of Centro Volontari della Sofferenza CVS, organism of pontifical rights which operates in about 20 different countries has just ended its first meeting .
Pastoral workers should see a sick person not as a “problem” but as an active participant in catechesis, indeed a person who fosters faith in others. Moreover pastoral workers must help every sick person to develop an adult faith .
“We realise - said CVS President Rev. Aufiero - this goal might appear impossible unless we ask: how should we approach and accompany the sick?” The answer was given by Rev. Luciano Ruga vice director of the Silenziosi Operai della Croce an association which coordinates the international confederation, who said “CVS International Confederation intends to intervene in this sector, contacting the different bishops’ conferences, and to propose its own apostolic method which not only identifies sick people in need of spiritual growth but also flanks them, helping them to listen to the Word of God and discover its warmth and the joy of Breaking the Bread”.
Spiritual care for the sick must help them realise that even alone and immobile at home they can do something for society and they are part of the plan for salvation.
The Meeting also discussed formation of pastoral workers not only members of CVS but anyone in contact with the sick and the suffering, such as families of people with a disability and also the sick themselves who can become “catechists” of other sick people.
