AFRICA/COTE D’ IVOIRE - Postponement of October 30 elections must not mean hope for peace is lost

Friday, 9 September 2005

Abidjan (Fides Service)- “The fact that there will be no election on 30 October does not mean that there will be no election at all” say local sources in Abidjan where yesterday 8 September UN representative for Cote d’Ivoire Antonio Monteiro said it would be “very difficult” to keep the date of 30 October for presidential elections.
“Monteiro’s statement comes as no surprise. In fact there are difficulties with regard to the organisation which objectively suggest a postponement if we want elections which are free, regular and transparent” the sources said. “They are discussing a new date in three or four months time. But the most urgent matter is to decide who is to lead the interim period until the election. This matter must be settled quickly”. The opposition does not intend to prolong the mandate of President Laurent Gbagbo. It would prefer a candidate from its own ranks.
“Despite the difficult situation there are positive aspects. First of all the players in the crisis, president, army, opposition parties, former New Forece rebels, have said they reject violence and exclude the possibility of a coup by any of the sides. Everyone realises that a military solution would only make things worse. Secondly despite reciprocal accusations the political players appear to be engaged in dialogue to find a solution” the sources told Fides.
“The people have had enough of the crisis which has dragged on since September 2002. Religious leaders, Catholics and Mulsims have repeatedly urged political leaders to find a solution to end the crisis which is causing great suffering to the people. The message launched by religoius leaders is to go ahead despite difficulties ”.
“The international community will have to continue efforts to mediate despite new challenges and difficulties” the sources concluded. On 31 August “New Forces” (rebellion which controls north and west of the country) refused mediation by South African President Mbeki (see Fides 1 September 2005). (L.M.)
