Wednesday, 4 May 2005

Lome (Fides Service)- The country is waiting for an official statement from the Opposition which will announce its intentions after the official proclamation of Faure Gnassingbé Eyadéma as the winner of presidential elections on 24 April” local Church sources in Togo told Fides. “In the meantime the capital Lome is still presided by the army. Although information is still restricted access to the Internet is once again possible but rather precarious”.
Yesterday 3 May the constitutional Court declared Gnassingbé Eyadéma son of the late president, President of the Republic of Togo. The court announced that according to provisional results Gnassingbé Eyadéma obtained 60.15% of the votes, the candidate of the Opposition coalition obtained 38.25%. Two other candidates - Harry Olympio ( moderate opposition) and Nicolas Lawson (who withdrew on the eve of the vote) - obtained respectively 0.55% and 1.04% of the votes. (L.M.)
