AMERICA/ECUADOR - Papal altar to serve as parish church

Saturday, 1 August 2015

Guayaquil (Agenzia Fides) – The infrastructure used for the Mass celebrated by Pope Francis during his recent pastoral visit to Guayaquil, in Ecuador, will soon serve as a new parish church centre for two districts of the "Piano Casa" Housing Plan undertaken in this area by the government five years ago.

The new church centre will stand on an area of 5,500 sq. metres. The land is not far from the Monteverde-El Chorrillo gas pipe which divides the "Piano Casa" in two districts.

Fides learned the news from Klaere Construcciones builders at present engaged in removing the infrastructure used by the Pope in order to reinforce the foundations before putting the Centre in its new position.

The archdiocese says the new church will keep its original design and therefore be a visible memorial of the visit Pope Francis paid to that city in 2015.
