ASIA/THAILAND - Trafficking of women and child prostitution continue

Wednesday, 22 July 2015

Bangkok (Agenzia Fides) - Trafficking of women, the majority from neighboring Countries such as Burma, Cambodia or Laos, continue to crowd the Thai brothels where these poor victims, often minors, are kept as slaves. In the region there is a large transnational traffic network to and from Thailand, says a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, by the head of an organization that deals with the protection of the rights of women and children, in which abuses in a brothel located in Suphanburi province, northwest of Bangkok are denounced. In unhealthy environments, women, aged between 13 and 20, had been forced into prostitution for months with the promise of a job in Thailand that would have freed them from the poverty of their Country of origin. In June, the police in Bangkok managed to free some young girls. Unfortunately, what contributes to aggravating the phenomenon is the corruption of authorities, the lack of cooperation between the Administration and the private sector and the bad laws in the Country. Despite being illegal, prostitution is an open practice and even protected by corrupt local officials. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 22/07/2015)
