AMERICA/MEXICO - Bishops on the escape of El Chapo, "we are not naive, we must eradicate corruption"

Irapuato (Agenzia Fides) - "The second escape of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, leader of the 'Cartel de Sinaloa' from the maximum security prison further undermines the little credibility of the population in the federal authorities", said the Bishop of Diocese of Irapuato, His Exc. Mgr. Jose de Jesus Martinez Zepeda. He then noted that "this case is a further tragedy for Mexico, because everything that is said about the safety and serenity of the country vanishes when a drug dealer escapes for the second time from a maximum security prison. We must all work to overcome this crisis of credibility, of justice, of law and then try to rebuild the country on a solid foundation of truth, justice and transparency". For Mgr. Martinez Zepeda authorities should have a sense of ethics and responsibility, and therefore categorically avoid corruption cases.
The note sent to Fides also indicates the statements of other pastors of the Catholic Church in Mexico about this striking example which the whole world is talking about. His Exc. Mgr. Francisco Moreno Barrón, Bishop of Tlaxcala, highlights the "fragility" of these centers of "maximum security".
His Exc. Mgr. Eduardo Porfirio Patiño Leal, Bishop of Córdoba, Veracruz, called on the authorities not to treat the population as "naive" by saying that no one was aware of a tunnel of a kilometer and a half from where, they say, El Chapo escaped. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 14/07/2015)
