AMERICA/ECUADOR - Still demonstrations against President Correa

Friday, 26 June 2015

Guayaquil (Agenzia Fides) – Tension in Ecuador continues due to the many demonstrations that have taken place in Guayaquil and Quito against President Rafael Correa. For a week the population and the opposition protested against the government's provisions that provide for the increase of some taxes. Despite the fact that two days ago the president announced a temporary withdrawal of the proposed law, demonstrations continued.
Yesterday, according to a note sent to Fides, the demonstration in Guayaquil was led by the mayor of the city. The people in the square shouted: "Ecuador is not Venezuela". Jaime Nebot, mayor of Guayaquil, concluded by saying that Correa is neither the owner nor the ruler of the country. If he wants an ideological confrontation we will have to go to the polls. The same occurred in Quito, where the large group of protesters was stopped by the police because they wanted to go to the seat of government.
The government has proposed the path of dialogue, news which was also welcomed by social institutions and even by the Church (see Fides 17/06/2015), but so far there have been no signs for a meeting with the opposition and other members of the groups of protesters. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 26/06/2015)
