ASIA - Climate change and ecology at the attention of Asian churches

Wednesday, 10 June 2015

Manila (Agenzia Fides) - The Churches of Asia focus their attention on environmental issues and climate change. As Fides learns, in view of the publication of Pope Francis’ Encyclical dedicated to the issues of protection of creation, the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC) will hold a regional workshop on climate change in Southeast Asia, which will in particular deal with the phenomenon in Indonesia and the Philippines. The meeting, to be held in Manila on 2 and 3 July 2015, aims to promote a response and a common proposal of the Asian churches on the subject of climate change.
The reflection will be aided by new studies. In fact, the protection of creation is one of the issues on which theologians within the FABC focused on: the Theological Office of the Federation has recently published a text that represents the Asian Christian approach on ecology. The new publication, entitled "Towards a responsible management of creation: an Asian Christian approach", is the result of a study undertaken by the theologians of the FABC and reflects on the theme from the point of view of its impact on Asia. The text presents the position of some major Asian traditions on ecology and further explores the issue from a biblical and theological perspective, and then recommends paths for the Churches of Asia.
