ASIA/VIETNAM – Children of the war return to Vietnam in search of relatives

Friday, 10 April 2015

Ba Ria (Agenzia Fides) - Some of the 4,500 Eurasian children that at the end of the Indochina War (1946-1954) were sent to orphanages in France, have just returned to Vietnam to search their relatives who were left behind many years ago and of whom they have never had any news. Most of the fathers, sent to Indochina for a limited period of time, did not take care of their children. Many of the mothers, who had no of economic resources and were concerned about the possible discrimination of their children, sent them to French orphanages. Almost all those who were children then, remember their departure, the ship that brought them from Saigon to Marseilles in 1955, as a particularly traumatic moment. Once in France, the children were sent to orphanages, their Vietnamese names were erased and many brothers and sisters were deliberately separated. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 10/04/2015)
