AMERICA/HAITI - Instability and violence against the religious

Saturday, 14 March 2015

Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Concern in the Catholic community of Haiti: according to the latest report of the Haitian Conference of Religious (CHR) on violence unleashed against religious institutions. As highlighted in the report sent to Fides, a Morfortiana nun is currently in a coma in St. Raphael hospital.
The Episcopal Conference of Haiti (CEH) has organized 24 hours of continuous prayer, on 13 and 14 March. "It is a gesture of compassion, of deep communion and effective solidarity with the religious and the other victims of aggression and violence", said Cardinal Chibly Langlois, Bishop of Les Cayes.
The faithful also pray for the delicate political and social phase the country is experiencing: the vote to elect two-thirds of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies will be held on August 9, while the vote for the presidential and local elections will be on October 25.
The political and social instability has caused an increase in the cost of living, bringing thousands of people to demonstrate against the government.
According to the Constitution, President Michel Martelly will not be able to present himself for a new term. The opposition continues to accuse him of abuse of power for having allowed the mandate of the Parliament to expire, dissolved in January 2015, with the intention to rule the country through presidential decrees.
