Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - Thousands of people have been displaced and many have died as torrential rain continues in Mozambique. This is what is reported in a statement sent to Agenzia Fides by Radio Mozambique. Some people have died trying to cross the river Licungo, in the province of Zambezia, others were swept away along with their cars. Yet there have been other deaths due to lightning in the northern province of Niassa. Police are looking for missing children as they were going to the region of Mocuba near the river Licungo. The floods have damaged one of the main roads that link the north and south of the Country. The emergency services are using boats to reach and rescue the flood victims.
The Mozambican government has issued a red alert for the central and northern provinces. For over a month the floods have been destroying nearby Malawi, where deaths and about 70 000 displaced have been recorded. The head of the Meteorological Services fears that flooding will continue especially in the northern and central parts of the Country. Livestock, crops, houses have been swept away by the floods, and several homes completely submerged. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 16/01/2015)
