Oberá (Agenzia Fides) - Today, January 15, the feast of Saint Arnold Janssen, founder of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), the Bishop of the diocese of Oberá (Argentina), His Exc. Mgr. Damián Santiago Bitar, recalls in a note sent to Agenzia Fides, the indispensable presence of the spiritual children of the Saint, the Divine Word Missionaries, in Argentina.
"The missionaries in my diocese are SVD and Redemptorists - explains the Bishop -. The vast majority of the Redemptorists come from Poland, while the SVD come from Asia, Africa and even Oceania. This presence enriches the culture of the province. The work carried out by the young missionaries in the pastoral care of our parishes is admirable and demanding. They give the example of how to sow the Gospel in new parishes".
The diocese of Oberá was established only six years ago, and of which Mgr. Santiago Bitar has been Bishop for 5 years. The diocese extends to the departments of Oberá, Cainguás, Guaraní, San Javier and 25 de Mayo. It has an area of 8717 square km and about 270,000 inhabitants, of whom 75 percent are Catholic. It has 17 parishes, 344 churches and chapels, seven diocesan priests, 20 religious priests, 25 permanent deacons and 19 religious nuns. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 15/01/2015)
