AMERICA/MEXICO - Corruption: a serious disease that has infected all

Wednesday, 14 January 2015

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - "The country is seriously injured and infected with a bacterium that has brought democracy to the point of death: corruption, a common practice that has become 'something natural', to the point of being a personal and social condition related to values". This is how the editorial of the latest issue of the Catholic weekly of the Archdiocese of Mexico, on Sunday, January 11 begins. "In Mexico - continues the text sent to Fides - corruption has entered all political and government institutions, as an epidemic that seems to have no cure. Therefore, the first battle to undertake is against this scourge, because corruption is the real cause of the development of drug trafficking and organized crime, social inequality, the weakening of institutions and poor administration of justice that encourages impunity, and increases the despair of Mexican citizens".
The raw analysis of the situation by the Catholic weekly followed the proposal of an urgent solution: "The solution to this scourge must necessarily pass through strict measures to control corruption, both preventive and punitive, and other more stringent measures such as making politicians eliminate corruption within their institutions. If there is political will, corrupt officials must disappear as soon as possible, and this should be an urgent task". The text ends with an invitation to all: "One must have the will to serve Mexico in order to start a real change". (CE) (Agenzia Fides 14/01/2015)
