AMERICA/HAITI - Agreement between the President and opposition: elections in 2015

Monday, 12 January 2015

Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - Just 5 years after the earthquake, the President of Haiti, Michel Martelly, and about twenty political leaders yesterday, January 11, signed the agreement to carry out elections in 2015. The formation of a new government of consensus is also expected. "The mission of the government of consensus is mainly to create conditions to facilitate free, transparent and inclusive elections" said the note sent to Fides from local sources.
For more than three years, the President is unable to organize elections for the Parliament and for the appointment of local Governors, thus determining a social and political paralysis of the country, which has yet to resolve the serious problems caused by the earthquake. Lately we are experiencing a wave of popular protests in order to put an end to this situation. Also yesterday, about 1,500 protesters, mostly young people, gathered to demand the resignation of President Martelly, whose term began in May 2011 and ends next year.
