AMERICA/COSTA RICA - Entrepreneurial initiatives for poor women

Tuesday, 23 December 2014

San Jose (Agenzia Fides) - According to the latest national census of households, the unemployment rate in Costa Rica has always been much higher among women than men, by a margin of 3%. In addition, 43.3% women-headed households are among those living in extreme poverty, 38.6% in 'normal' poverty and 33% are those considered vulnerable. To address this phenomenon, thanks to the program Ideas Productivas, about 500 poor women have begun a process of business training as entrepreneurs that will allow them to overcome their present condition, encouraging the development of skills. Agriculture, recycling, aesthetics, graphic design, jewelery, as well as grocery stores, bakeries and patisseries, soft drinks and more are among the projects that are being developed.
