AMERICA/ARGENTINA - The fight against drugs should be considered a State matter

Wednesday, 5 November 2014

Posadas (Agenzia Fides) – Drugs are a scourge that is part of the death structure, and is "an evil that is growing rapidly in our country, it is uncontrolled, produces silence and fear, forces citizens to be mere spectators of something that makes us feel defeated", these are the words expressed by the Bishop of Posadas, His Exc. Mgr. Juan Rubén Martínez, who again points out the dramatic situation with regard to drug abuse in Argentina in his weekly letter, reported to Agenzia Fides.
"It seems normal, and this is very serious, that who fights against drugs is exposed to personal threats or towards his family", continued the Bishop, who defines proposals that talk about "the liberalization of all drug use deplorable and irresponsible, referring of course to the use that is damaging our children and young people who find themselves victims of the mafia, which grow uncontrollably in our country". The Bishop also points out the lack of political education and prevention, and emphasizes that drugs do not give freedom, but turns people into slaves.
"Due to the seriousness of drug problems in our country and in our province, it is necessary to adopt public policies and consider the fight against this social evil as a State matter" says the Bishop of Posadas, pointing out that in his diocese a pastoral path has begun to improve and coordinate the answers to the problem, especially considering that young people and teenagers are the most affected.
Mgr. Juan Rubén Martínez is aware of having to face "an evil that involves very influential sectors of public and private life", and that "dealing with this problem generates silences that can discourage people". In conclusion, the Bishop insists that "drug is death", and the Word of God tells us that Jesus is " resurrection and life" and "even if there are many shadows in our reality, we believe that with regards to this problem life will triumph over death".
