ASIA/IRAQ - The Premier of Iraqi Kurdistan: Christians must not emigrate

Monday, 13 October 2014

Erbil (Agenzia Fides) - Iraqi Christians must resist anything that pushes them to leave their land and migrate abroad, while patiently waiting for the defeat of the jihadists of the Islamic State (IS), which will open the doors of their return to their homes. This is what Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, said during a meeting in Erbil with a delegation of American Catholic operators engaged in humanitarian support to refugees hosted in the area after escaping from Mosul and the cities of the Nineveh Plain faced with the advancing of the militias of the IS. According to reports from Iraqi sources, the Premier - who is the nephew of Masud Barzani, President of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan - stressed the need to "rebuild trust between all the social components", avoiding that the aggression of the jihadists creates the unleashing of sectarian impulses and the sinking of any possibility of coexistence between different ethnic and religious identities.
