AFRICA/SUDAN - Epidemics and food shortages in refugee camps in Kass, South Darfur

Wednesday, 1 October 2014

Kass (Agenzia Fides) - The displaced people living in the camp of El Batari, in Kass, South Darfur, complain of poor health, the spread of diseases and lack of health care by the authorities. According to what was reported by the coordinator of the camp to the local Radio Dabanga, typhoid, malaria and diarrheal diseases are the most common, especially among children. The environment in the camps has worsened due to the accumulation of rainwater on the roads leading up to Kass and this has caused the spread of epidemics. The coordinator has launched an appeal to the health authorities to intervene immediately in order to prevent the proliferation of diseases. In addition, an appeal was launched to the World Food Programme to provide aid due to the critical shortage of wheat. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 01/10/2014)
