AFRICA/GABON - Extreme poverty in a Country with one million and a half inhabitants

Monday, 12 May 2014

Libreville (Agenzia Fides) - 30% of the Gabonese population lives below the poverty line. In an African country such data, compared to other countries of the continent, should not cause alarm, however, the number is very high since only a million and a half people live in Gabon and the Country has high export earnings from manganese and wood, and since the 50s oil flows in abundance. The social situation in Gabon is serious. To reveal this reality is a recent study published by the Government, in Libreville, according to information gathered by Fides, which also shows that 95 000 Gabonese families live on less than a dollar a day. More than half of the population lives in the capital, where rents are overly expensive, there is a very high rate of unemployment that daily degenerates into crime. The government, unlike in other countries, provides a number of measures in favor of disabled people. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 12/05/2014)
