AMERICA/MEXICO - Cold and rain proliferate infections and cause the death of children in Chiapas

Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Agenzia Fides) - In the remote Emiliano Zapata community, in the municipality of Yajalón, in Chiapas, Mexico, five children under one have died due to acute respiratory infections, and 41 others have been infected. According to local authorities, the phenomenon has been increasing in the last hours and health authorities are taking action to try to protect the children affected. We are dealing with respiratory infections caused by cold and by torrential rain, with cough and high fever. The bacteria that causes it, spreads in winter in very remote places. To limit the spread of infection, as well as local health authorities, also other groups are committed to vaccinating patients to prevent a possible epidemic. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 07/01/2013)
